Favorite Recordings: Brazilian Disco Boogie Sounds - 1978-1982 Selected By Junior Santos

It always pays off when you go digging with a local head. France's Favorite Recordings tapped noted Brazilian drummer and record collector Junior Santos to put together this excellent comp of Brazilian funk, boogie and disco from the 1978 to 1982. The era was marked by the dominance of musicians and arrangers such as Lincoln Olivetti, Robson Jorge, and Oberdan Magalhães along with Banda Black Rio. Their work in Brazil's recording studios produced sophisticated and original arrangements that would go on to transform the Brazilian musical perspective. Although the canvas is mainly boogie and disco the funk and carioca influence is heavy. Whether it's the swing of Solange's "Eu Quero Um Baby Seu," backed by Banda Black Rio or the groove of Os Famks' "Labirinto" you can really feel the Brazilian force behind the music. The opener, Cristina Camargo's "Moral Tem Hora," might be the secret heater of this collection. It seems to carry on the funk of Marcos Valle's "Estrellar" and I ain't mad at that. Santos' selections seem to embrace the wide variety of music that was coming out of Brazil's studios at the time. Brazilian Disco Boogie Sounds is your easy ticket to the expansive world of Brazilian funk, boogie and disco.
